The Open University of Cyprus hosted the Webinar «Making a PULCHRA World» earlier this year. The webinar was attended by the stakeholders of OUC team who presented issues of promotion of Sustainable Urban Mobility in Cyprus, Sustainable Development and Urban Planning as well as Zero Waste to Landfill actions. Presented by Ms. Vana Gkania (Transportation Specialist – Civil Engineer of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works), Mr. Mario Efthymiou (Office of the Environment Commissioner) and Mr. Theodoulo Makrygianni (Head of Corporate and Social Responsibility of CYTA tools).
The webinar was greeted by Dr. Antonis Zorpas (Master Program «Environmental Management and Conservation»), head of the OUC research team and Director of the Laboratory of Chemical Engineering and Sustainability Engineering. The project was presented by the research collaborator Mrs. Georgia Chatziparaskeva.
At the end of the webinar, the students of the 5 schools presented the actions that they are going to implement through the poster they created.

The posters represent the actions for each school. You can find below the posters, the title of each action and the relevant City Challenge Themes which had presented:
1. Paralimni Lyceum
Title of the action: “Renovation of space – Innovative actions: Renovation of the area around the Lyceum of Paralimni”
City Challenge Theme 5: Moving around the city – green transport and mobility patterns for community development.
The poster presents:
- The procedure and the steps of the action relevant with research
- The critical points (safety, mobility, transportation, pedestrians, cycling, green spaces, etc.), meetings and conversation with policy makers to create a map.
The map will reflect the students’ views.
2. Agios Ioannis Lyceum, Limassol
Title of the action: Can you turn our Community into a PULCHRA Community?
City Challenge Theme 4: From waste disposal to resource efficiency – Circular economy at the city scale.
The poster presents:
1. The benefits of the food and waste composting
2. The benefits of reduce, reuse and recycling
3. The impact on the environment from the plastic waste and the batteries
4. Describe the aluminium cons and pros
5. The benefits of the paper reuse
Also at the end, they describe the objective and the purpose for creating a game relevant to the waste management. The goals are to raise the awareness and educate students about the circular economy.
3. Foti Pitta Lyceum, Frenaros
Title of the action: I study the present I prepare the future
City Challenge Themes 1 and 3: Powering Cities without Harming the Climate and Regenerating urban space to connect people in a healthy environment.
The poster presents the:
1. Ecological Footprint
2. How they can measure the green house emissions
3. They have created a questionnaire for all students in order to collect data about the students’ daily nutrition habits
4. Creating a garden in the school yard
4. Ethnomartyras Kyprianos Lyceum – Strovolos
Tithe of the action: Urban revival: we go the green way
City Challenge Theme 3: Regenerating urban space to connect people in a healthy environment.
The poster presents:
1. What are the actions that the school chosen
2. The purpose of the actions
3. What microclimate is and what affects (temperatures, humidity, wind speed, soil, trees, etc.)
4. The methodology
5. Apeition Lyceum, Agros
Title of the action: Re-use – Re-birth……ahead of Waste!
City Challenge Theme 4: From waste disposal to resource efficiency – Circular economy at the city scale.
The objectives of the schools are:
1. Investigation of waste management
2. Create a secondary shop to sale reusable school products
3. Create a book with leftovers recipes
