In celebration of International Earth Day on April 22, Bernu Vides skola held an online event for PULCHRA school science teams with four great experts to inspire students to research a healthy urban environment.
Viesturs Ķerus, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Ornithological Society, described with illustrative examples how to organize bird watching in the city.
Rita Birziņa, a researcher at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia, presented the environmental education project “Transport and Environment” discussing car exhaust gas pollution. Participants had the opportunity to try out the interactive platform Padlet. According to the results of the Padlet survey, we found that most students go to school on foot, which reduces the ecological footprint.
Jurijs Kondratenko, project manager of the urban planning company Grupa93, introduced multifunctional rainwater management solutions in the urban environment with examples from Latvia and Northern Europe.
Continuing the topic of water, the participants assessed the quality of water in Latvia. According to the participants, the water quality was assessed as moderately good, confirmed by the last speaker, a specialist from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center Linda Fībiga, who provided an insight into how they monitor water to assess and determine the quality of water in Latvian waterbodies.
At the end of the event, participants expressed their view on their actions for the benefit of the Earth. So let’s promise ourselves to treat the Earth a little better every day.
