“Cities and Climate Change: new challenges for education at the school level”
On November 7th, 2022, the PULCHRA project held a third all stakeholder workshop in Athens, Greece on “Cities and Climate Change: new challenges for education at the school level”. Participants representing 10 different countries attended the hybrid event. The aim of the workshop was to discuss experiences with PULCHRA in the context of urban environmental challenges and climate change. The workshop also provided an important opportunity for PULCHRA schools to share their experiences with City Challenges and present their project results.
Participants were interested to hear from keynote speaker, Konstantina Karydi, Senior Advisor Resilient Cities Catalyst, on ‘Innovative solutions to tackle climate change at the urban scale’. This informative presentation was followed by Μaria Dimopoulou, Environmental Education Expert, who shared an insightful and practical presentation on ‘Strengthening the role of schools for education against climate change’.
This was followed by two interesting panel discussions: the first on Climate Challenges for Cities and new learning needs for schools – the perspective of knowledge institutions and the second on How to communicate climate change to young generations – the perspective of NGOs. Participants heard from Charles University (Czech Republic), Open University of Cyprus, University of Cologne (Germany), University of Udine (Italy), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and the University of Athens (Greece) and non-governmental bodies TEREZA (Czech Republic), AN TAISCE (Ireland), BVS (Latvia), UNEP GRID (Poland).
Participants listened to 12 inspirational school presentations with excellent examples of how local stakeholders were engaged in solving city sustainability challenges across the EU.
The workshop also opened a field for discussion on climate education, opportunities and barriers of Open Schooling, engagement of stakeholders in school projects and provided an opportunity for international networking.
