PUCHRA SCHOOL SCIENCE CLUB AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ŠLAPANICE

    By pulchra-ireland | blogposts | Comments are Closed | 11 February, 2022 | 2

As an important topic for this year we chose the protection of bird species in Šlapanice. We came up with this idea while looking at the new school pavilion, which, like many other modern buildings today, is not lacking huge glass surfaces.

Unfortunately, these glass surfaces are often a death trap for birds, who cannot see these surfaces and often get seriously injured or even killed when they hit them. We have therefore been thinking about how to improve the environment around our school so that our feathered friends can thrive here too.

    Glass Surfaces in Building

In the autumn and winter, we have been able to place several bird feeders around the school and map dangerous glass surfaces on the school building. We have also been observing and recording what species of birds are most common here.

Placing Bird Feeders and Recording Bird Species

To better understand what they need, we studied their anatomy as part of the school science club. We also searched the internet for information on where they live and what they eat. We then created simple information panels with recommendations on the best things to feed the birds in winter and also added some panels with pictures of the most common species that live here.

    Research on Bird Species

In order to spread the information we have found, we have also set up social media accounts (Instagram, Youtube, Google). There we plan to post photos and videos from the school science club in the future.

We also want to place birdhouses around the school during the spring and summer and observe how the birds gradually settle in. We will use a photo trap to make observations and then use the footage to create a short video. To prevent unnecessary injury and death to the birds, we will cover the most dangerous glass areas of the new pavilion with UV stickers, which the birds can see clearly and can then safely avoid the windows.
